Renewed focus on modern slavery and on the anniversaries of the transatlantic slave trade
Posted by Isaac Amo Kyereme | Posted in
Every day sees visitors breaking down in tears while touring 97,000-square-foot Elmina Castle, west of Cape Coast, Ghana. Built in 1482 by the Portuguese as a gold trading post on the Gulf of Guinea, it was turned into a fortress for the transatlantic slave trade by the Dutch in 1637.
These days tourists get to see the once-luxurious suites where the European slave merchants stayed and sexually exploited female slaves. They also see the dungeons that once housed the slaves, and the dingy, dimly lit corridors that lead to the “door of no return.” This door is in the outer walls of the castle, facing the sea, and was so named because once slaves walked through it they never returned

Since President Barack Obama prevailed in the 2012 U.S. presidential elections, there has been much talk about the reasons why the Republican Party lost the highly contested race. Much of the chatter has surrounded the fact that the Republican Party clearly and mistakenly neglected a significant population of the voting electorate, Spanish speaking people or Hispanics. The statistics show that Hispanics favored Obama over Republican candidate Mitt Romney in the November 6, 2012 election by 71 percent to 27 percent.

I was sure I very well knew the victim in the gruesome cannibalism murder incident as soon as the picture appeared in the media. I tried so hard to remember the face but the span of over 20 years blocked my memory. Kojoe Agyei Kodie aka Tiger enrolled as a freshman at SDA Secondary School, Bekwai, Ghana, when I was in my fourth year. He was such a smart boy that everyone who came into contact with him, just could not help but love him. He often appeared in his well pressed uniform and his trade mark, a pair of white ankle high socks and a pair of white tennis shoes to match made him stand out wherever he was. He spoke flawless English and his thoughts and reasoning was far beyond that of his age.
Making The Grade, But Not The Jobs-The Case Of African Immigrants In The US
Posted by Isaac Amo Kyereme | Posted in African Trumpet News Education Law Immigration and You
Africans immigrants to North America are always presented as hard working, friendly, education-focused minorities that adapt well to their new host countries. This image of the hard-working African immigrant is often presented as a stereotype that is in contrast to U.S. born African (Black) Americans. In fact, the majority of Africans come to the U.S do come for the purposes of education more than any other reason. This has led to a situation where more than one-third (36.6%) of African immigrants to the U.S. have a bachelor’s or higher degree”. When it comes to education, African immigrants as a group have a higher education rate than immigrants from the West Indies, Asia, and Europe. When compared to U.S. citizens more Africans in the U.S report having a college degree than U.S. born minorities (Asian, Latino, and Black Americans). Africans in the U.S. are doing significantly better in educational attainment rates where 36.6% have a bachelors degree compared to 29.5% White Americans who are also the privileged majority and have the most access to the power institutions in the U.S.

Because of this gap in their history, descendants of the slaves who are conscious of their identity have worried about their true identity for the longest time.

In Genesis chapter 11:6, the good book talks about a people who had become so united and hence very powerful that the great God of heaven had these people dispersed across the whole face of the earth. The fear was that they might out of their unity do something abominable. The story refers to this group of people as the people of the tower of Babel.
That” unity is strength” an aphorism shared in many cultures but eluded Africans collectively is a fact that cannot be overemphasized. Even symbols of unity have been created in some African cultures as constant reminder of the power of unity.

Bronx Report-Experiences of African children in Bronx public schools
Posted by Isaac Amo Kyereme | Posted in
Africans are not new to the Americas. In 1312 Mansa Musa’s brother Mansa (King/Sultan) Abu Bakri II of the well-known Mali Empire made his second trip to the Americas. He was reported to have visited the Mississippi and other rivers. Historical records also have shown certain groups of West Africans around the fourteenth century were living with Native Americans in the Gulf of Mexico. Peoples of West Africa have an untold history of having connections with the Americas before Europeans. After the end of slavery, and following the independent period of many countries in Africa, Africans though in small numbers continue to travel to the US. With political turmoil and other natural disasters affecting the continent, we have seen in recent years many Africans immigrating to the US. A popular destination of Africans particularly those from the West is New York City; and the Bronx being perhaps the all time favourite place where the majority live.

Globalization or the ability of many people, ideas and technology to move from country to country - is not new. In Africa, it was initiated by the slave trade and given impetus by colonialism and Christian missionaries.
The early missionaries saw African culture and religion as a deadly adversary and as an evil that had to be eliminated.
In 1876, a 27-year-old missionary named Mary Slessor emigrated from Scotland to spend the rest of her life in Nigeria.
For her efforts in trying to covert the people of Nigeria, Mary Slessor’s photograph appears on Scotland’s ten pound note, and her name can be found on schools, hospitals and roads in Nigeria.

Like all ghettos worldwide, it is in a total state of anarchy. Drug abuse, rape, prostitution, armed robbery and murder are a way of life. The youth have no hope and no future as all the schools are shut down by the authorities. The only law that exists is the 'law of the jungle.' The French authorities respond by 'locking in’ or out the citizens of the city, depending which side of the wall Parisians are on. Movements in and out of the ghetto are regulated at police checkpoints. The citizens are caged in, just like the Palestinians on the Gaza Strip.
