WELCOME TO FASHIONISTA AFRICA PAGE

By: Christiana Amo-Kyereme

Welcome to the fashionista Africa page. A page that will be dealing with all matters beautiful with an African perspective.
Africa and it’s people are beautiful inside out.
The less said about our women the better. We are fearfully and wonderfully made and so for each edition we will be discussing what makes us beautiful as a people. Profiles of many up and coming Fashionista’s will be profiled. And in this edition we present IyZaiah, a passionately creative designer. She is very gifted.
We will have tips on very simple natural ways of keeping ourselves beautiful and healthy.
We will also have tips on how to make up for things on us we want to hide and also learn how to eccentuate what the good Lord has endowed us with.
This page is also open to everyone who believes in African fashion to contribute. I must however remind you that we will do as much as possible to discourage nudity disguised under the banner of Fashion.
This is Fashionista Africa, get on board.

Designer For This Edition:

IyZaiah

About The Designer

Akua Serwaa-Sarfo (born  June 1, 1988) is a Ghanaian-born fashion designer, producing apparel for both women and men. She now resides in Ottawa Canada where she attends the University of Ottawa majoring in Public Health.
She's a full-time student and a part-time designer. Although Serwaa enjoys Public health and charity work, her true passion has always been in fashion. She took an interest in fashion at a very young age and began designing outfits for her dolls. This passion followed her into her teenage and adult life. She started hand sewing outfits for her dolls as well as herself. Her friends realized that they could not let this talent go unnoticed so for her 21st birthday they chipped in and got her a sewing machine. After a month Serwaa taught herself how to sew and up until this day she is still sewing and getting better with time. She designed and sewed every piece of IyZaiah's first collection.

About IyZaiah
"My line represents a channel for my expression of life; being the best you can be but never forgetting where you come from. “IyZaiah epitomizes sophisticated fashion forward couture fusing African culture with contemporary flare," said Serwaa.
The name IyZaiah, meaning "the Lord helps me", has been one that has always been close to the designers' heart. It is the name she wants to give her first son therefore the line is named after him.
Serwaa is a huge supporter of independent women who are strong, confident and proud of their heritage. Her designs represent the way in which she views women. Sophisticated! IyZaiah for women is designed to enhance the natural beauty of a woman while pushing the limits of Afropolitan fashion.
IyZaiah for men will be released in the year 2011.

Shows
In September 2009, IyZaiah made a traditional dress for the Ghanaian contestant Theresa at Miss Afrocan Pageant. The dress won first place for best traditional wear.
IIn October 2009, IyZaiah debut their first collection, An Ode to Africa, at Carleton University's Akwaaba Showcase. It was without a doubt the most talked about show of the night. After the show, loads of people approached Serwaa (CEO and designer of IyZaiah) with business and soon after that IIyZaiah spread throughout the city.
In January 2010, IyZaiah participated in a Talent show at Carleton University where they came 3rd out of about 30 acts.
In February 2010, IyZaiah had a fashion show at the Carleton University Black History Month Show.

What the Future Holds

There is a lot in store for the future. Serwaa is currently working on her 2nd collection, which is set to debut in fall 2010. This collection will be one that is very close to the designers' heart for it will be mixing her two passions together; fashion and health/charity. Every dress in this collection represent hope to the underprivileged children in Ghana. Also, all funds for the fashion show will go towards her charity.
In Spring 2011, IyZaiah will launch the men's collection so please look out for that.
IyZaiah shoe collection will also debut in Spring 2011 along with the men's collection

TIT BITS ON FASHION- WATER, THE LATEST MUST HAVE ACCESSORY FOR ELEGANT WOMEN

Water is important to the mechanics of the human body. The body cannot work without
it, just as a car cannot run without gas and oil. In fact all the cell and organ functions made up in our entire anatomy and physiology depend on water for their functioning.
The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water depending on size of the body. To
function properly, the body requires between one to seven liters of water per day to avoid dehydration.  About 6-8 glasses of water (approximately 2 liters) is the
minimum to maintain proper hydration.
Water serves as a lubricant. Water forms the base for saliva and it forms the fluids
that surround the joints Water regulates the body temperature, as the cooling and heating is distributed through perspiration. Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby eliminating waste - the best detox agent.
Water regulates  metabollism. Water plays a very key role in the prevention of diseases.
Always have a bottle of water with you. Replace the cup of coffee with water either in a thermos or glass bottle preferably.
Always have an extra bottle of water in your car, at the gym, at work, etc.
Make a conscious effort to calculate how much water you drink at the end of the day.
That will help you meet the minimum supply required daily.
When you are trying to loose some pounds/weight, you can replace all the fried foods by drinking half a cup of water as frequently as possible.
The additional benefits of drinking water for beauty are, it will not take long for your efforts to be rewarded. You will realize a brighter complexion and healthy skin that feels moist with an increase in energy levels. An improvement in mental and physical performance. KEEP SIPPING!!! YOU WILL GLOW!!

The two youngest siblings have made British history as the youngest students to ever enter high school. EDITORIAL-SUPPORT THE AFRICAN TRUMPET

Any time a potential writer or advertiser in conversation inquires after a pause, where are you from? If he does not answer he is from where I am originally from, no matter how excited he was about our project and how happy he is about Africans projecting a positive image of Africa etc.etc, I immediately conclude, that is the last time I will hear from him or her. It is so sad that even business people looking at the African community market and accept that this vehicle is the best platform for them will still feel reluctant to advertise and support this project just because perhaps the editors name does not sound familiar.

MONEY MATTERS with Ken Barnes: Is there anything like a good debt?

MONEY MATTERS with Ken Barnes: Is there anything like a good debt? Debt- defined loosely as an amount of money owed to a person, organization or nation for funds borrowed is one of the most talked about topics in any household and financial planning workshop. Countries and Nations devote whole ministries and boards to discuss and manage debt. My church, The Solid Foundation Chapel, is currently treating debt as a topic in our practical living series lessons. I have personally over the years taught many workshops on Debt and how to get out of debt. So I will like to discuss an aspect of this all important subject-debt this month!

MONEY MATTERS with Ken Barnes -The New Credit Card Law and how it Impacts You!

MONEY MATTERS with Ken Barnes -The New Credit Card Law and how it Impacts You! One of the popular questions my office has received since February this year has been on the new Credit Card Act, the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act (CARD Act) which took effect on February 22nd 2010 and how it impacts them, so I decided to research into it. Below are some of my findings from articles, publications, industry practitioners and personal experiences of real people.

AFRIKAN GODDESS - What Do You Mean You Don’t Want to Have Children?

AFRIKAN GODDESS - What Do You Mean You Don’t Want to Have Children? By: N. Amma Twum-Baah...... There are many statements a woman should never utter out loud, even to her closest friends. For African women, there's the following: "I don't want to be a wife," I don't want to be a mother," and "I don't know how/want to cook!" Any of these utterances even among friends are bound to get you shunned, heavily judged, questioned and labeled by both men and women alike. And even as unacceptable as these statements are, some are more tolerable than others. "I don't know how to cook" might get you by among some circles because it's never too late to learn. Some may even attempt to rescue you by throwing a few recipe lifelines your way for the occasional times when the need arises to impress others with your cooking skills - like the new man in your life. Unless, of course, your 'I don't know how to cook" is because of your "I don't want to be a wife." In which case, you have nothing to worry about besides having to explain why you "don't want to be a wife!"

ATTAINING PERMANENT RESIDENCY (A GREEN CARD) IN THE UNITED STATES

ATTAINING PERMANENT RESIDENCY (A GREEN CARD) IN THE UNITED STATES THE LAW & YOU with Ben Frimpong Esq...... Becoming a permanent resident in the United States is an important step in realizing the American dream and becoming a citizen. A lawful permanent resident may apply for United States citizenship or naturalization, after five years of residency. The time period is shortened to three years if married to a U.S. citizen, or four years if permanent residency was was received through asylum. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) defines a permanent resident as someone who has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis. As proof of that status, a person is granted a permanent resident card, commonly called a "green card." The USCIS has outlined several ways that a person can become a permanent resident. Most individuals are sponsored by a family member or an employer in the United States. Other individuals may also become permanent residents through refugee or asylee status or other humanitarian programs.

Our Kids:  Are they African or What?

Our Kids:  Are they African or What? Michael Mupfawa (father of three third culture kids) is the Senior Pastor at All Nations African Church of the Seventh-day Adventists and a freelance writer. It felt like a high school debate as each youth passionately contributed to the subject matter at hand. We were in South Carolina where I was conducting a camp meeting for the Association of Zimbabwean Adventists in North America (AZANA). It was an unforgettable experience, at least for me. As a Pastor attempting to break the ice with the vibrant group of young people; high school and college-going age, I introduced Ellen, a Ghanaian young lady who was a guest that summer from Sweden. I asked the group whether Ellen (who was born of Ghanaian parents in Sweden) was Ghanaian or Swedish. That is what started the trouble. Some chose Ghana others Sweden and still others gave her a hyphenated citizenship as the variant answers poured like rain. I must say that there was friendly fire in that room! Some said the girl was European while others argued African.
